Structure of farms
  • 590,000 farms in France in 2003, of which 370,000 so-called “professional” farms.

  • These 370,000 farms concentrate 95% of agricultural potential (dairy and horticultural production, wine-growing, beef rearing, major crops).

  • Average sizeof farms in France: 42 ha.

  • Average size of professional farms: 70 ha in 2003.

  • French farms: family-run farms (75% of work done by the farmer and his family).

  • The number of professional farms fell by 2.3%between 2000 and 2003.
