Role playwith regard to decision-making and the global approach to running a farm

It is obligatory for candidates born after 1st January 1971 applying for installation grants.

Duration

The course has to last 6 months, with several possibilities of dividing it up: 3 months + 3 months or 2 months + 4 months.

Waiting time between the two parts of the course must not exceed one year.

Once the course has been taken, validity is permanent.

Your previous experience (in your own country or in France) may be taken into account to obtain dispensations as to the duration of the training course.

To find out about these possibilities of partial dispensation: contact local Chamber of Agriculture.

What are the conditions under which the 6-month course must be carried out?

This course must be directed by an approved farmer course instructor: for French candidates it must be taken less than 50km from their home, you must take it in France! In some cases it can be taken on the farm you wish to take over : see Special cases: Mechanism for the gradual acquisition of professional agricultural skills qualifications.

It is also possible to take your course in a company linked to an agricultural activity but at least two months of the course must be taken on a farm.

Who to contact

Taking the “6-month course” is part of the procedure for you to set up as a Young Farmer in France.

The bodies that will guide you with this procedure for installation will be able to advise you better at local level:

The SESAME network helps French candidates to carry out their courses abroad, it also helps foreign candidates to take their course in France. Contact them!

These local bodies will help you:
- to find an approved farmercourse instructor
- to prepare your file

... whilst guiding you and monitoring and evaluating your course.

Special cases: Mechanism for the gradual acquisition of professional agricultural skills qualifications.

In some cases, the 6-month course can take the form of a pre-agricultural installation course: this is particularly the case for foreign candidates wishing to take over a farm in France.

The pre-installation course can last 12 months for candidates born after 1st January 1971.

The aim of the pre-installation course is to encourage installation through giving the young person responsibilities on a farm, whether or not it results in the transmission of the farm on which it is taken.

It can be taken by any candidate between the ages of 19 and 35, committed to setting up within a period of 2 years after the end of the pre-installation course.
