Renting a farm in France
The status of tenancy in France

The status of tenancy is defined by a range of laws
(French Rural Code) and by Prefects’ decrees.

It defines the rights and obligations between owners leasing their property and lease holder farmers.

The contract signed is a “Rural lease”.

“Provision in return for payment of property for agricultural use with a view to farming”.

What you should remember

"Provision": transfer of benefit

"In return for payment": financial participation by the farmer (a fixed amount, the tenancy, subject to Prefect’s decree).

"Property for agricultural usage": which excludes forests, moors, maquis.

"Farming" : having an agricultural activity.
